You Can Use Your Flexible Spending Account for LASIK!

Tuesday, November 15 2016 9:50 AM

If you’re lucky enough to have an employer who offers a flexible spending account (FSA) as part of your health insurance, you probably already know about the great tax advantages you get with it.

One of the rules governing the use of a flexible spending account is that you have to use all of the invested money by the end of the year on qualified purchases. If you don’t, the money is forfeited. Many refer to this as “use it or lose it.”

Now, we’re not sure about you, but we’re not into forfeiting large chunks of our hard earned dollars. Figuring out how to spend those remaining funds at the end of the year can be troubling. Basically, you’re trying to use the funds wisely by predicting the future. Will you need more bandaids or hot packs? Acne treatment for the kids or something else entirely?

Sure, you could stock up on more pain relievers and sunscreen. That’s always a wise use of your funds. But you could also make a more lasting investment…

Your eyesight.

While you can find a number of lists that give you a good idea of which purchases qualify for FSA dollars (like this), you may not be aware that you can fund your LASIK surgery with it as well.

LASIK is one of the few ways you can spend this year’s remaining dollars and have it continue to pay off for years to come. Aspirin has a shelf life of just a few years, but improved eyesight last 10-20 years, sometimes even longer.

Not only does LASIK give you an immediate and lasting return on your investment, but the tax savings can make it an even better investment than you might think. In some cases (depending on your tax bracket), you could be saving up to 40% when all is said and done!

And even if your remaining FSA funds don’t cover the total cost of your surgery, you can couple your funds with a discount through your eye insurance (another 15% off, depending on your plan) and sign up for simple financing terms to cover the rest.

There’s always time and money to buy more cough syrup. But you only get one set of eyes.

There’s no better time to put those remaining dollars to use than right now.To find out more about how Grene Laser, Wichita’s top LASIK practice, can help you put your FSA money to good use before the end of the year, contact us today.

"After having to wear contacts for 20 years, I knew it was time to throw them away when I became a firefighter. I now wake up to respond to an alarm with clear vision and I don't have to worry about my eyes. It truly was an amazing and life changing experience."
